Dogz In Need

Michelle Johnson: I have been an animal Lover since I was a very small child. It seems like I am always rescuing some animal or creature in need--Once even a 6 foot iguana!! In my heart, I feel there is no greater gift (than a parent can give a child) than a dog. They love you unconditionally and are loyal companions. Dogs are teachers and from them children learn about compassion, love and responsibility.

Over the years, I have worked with many different types animals. I volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Illinois, working with fawns, raccoons, possums and other wild animals. These experiences were often challenging. Have you ever you tried feeding a Pelican? Its not easy. I also volunteered at a Big Cat Sanctuary in Wisconsin...It was an amazing experience. I was able to get close to and fall in love with lions, tigers (Yes, bears too), ligers, wolves, panthers and more....You learn a true respect for these majestic creatures. It was sad that this place had to exist...but such a blessing that it did.

I have also had amazing experiences with disaster work for animals. I helped animals during the 2003 and 2007 California fires. I reunited displaced animals with their owners and helped to give them shelter. In 2005, in the wake of Katrina, I traveled to Louisiana and worked for 40 days with a group called Noahs Wish. During that time Rita hit. It was complete devastation, but in the end, incredibly rewarding. Especially reuniting owners with their beloved pets.

I have seen so much misery in the lives of forgotten animals...so much so, that I decided to start my own rescue. Dogz In Need was born in 2007 and has been my baby ever since. Through my rescue (and work I did prior to my rescue) I have been able to help over 2000 animals. I work with mostly dogs that no one else wants...The ones that have been neglected, deprived of food, love and care...The ones that have been starved and beaten down physically and emotionally. Each and every one is so very special. I rehabilitate and teach them how to trust, love and learn to be dogs again! Then finally, they are adopted out to loving forever homes.

Animals are a huge part of my life. I currently have four large dogs and two cats. I cannot imagine my life without them. I believe in God and that everyone has a calling. Rescuing animals is mine. I feel that the Lord has given me this gift of helping these once forgotten animals as my Ministry. I take it very seriously. Helping in whatever way I can, I will never turn away an animal in need.

I am also a single mom and flight attendant.
